AARDVARKS STRIKE THREE AND RIDE LATE DRUCK COMEBACK
Pete Meakin makes Debut in First Game Victory

The first league game of the season saw Aardvarks travelling all the way to Groby!

Pete Meakin made his Aardvarks debut in place of Jayne Barrs.  The first player to do so since...?  (Kate Morrison on 18 Jan 2003).

There was a slight change from last week.  Kate Shaw and Sarah Dent were unavailable, Katherine Chapman returned.  Dave Downton was a no show (On his near-death sick-bed is the later addition to the earlier less sympathetic report).

The performance in the first half was competent.  Some short corner this time, with fewer conceded.  Ruth Jones was strong in defence, whilst Katherine Chapman was playing well as a holding midfielder.

First goal came from Andrew Hemsill, a nice shot of some power. A second was added by Luke Meakin after some good team work.  Half-time was 2-0, with a Druck player taking a short ‘yellow card’ break following excessive use of the shoulder.  (How can that sort of be allowed – for any Druck readers – this is called irony).

Plenty of Aardvarks chances to very few for Druck was the pattern.  It became 3-0 after Martin Leake flicked home.  This after he had a better chance to score minutes earlier.  Katherine Chapman also had a shot (shocker).  It was all looking like a job well done when Luke Meakin got a knock on the knee and then Druck came back.  A well taken chance, followed by a top corner flick from a short corner made the last four minutes tricky.  Nicely rounded off by a short corner that made a 3-3 draw more likely than seemed feasible ten minutes earlier.  The risk passed when Paul McGreevy intercepted and cleared.  Phew!

Overall we deserved the clearer victory but Druck’s late onslaught made it far closer than it could have or should have been.  Nice debut by Pete Meakin (nice new kickers!!!) and other strong performances from Ruth Jones and Katherine Chapman.  Everyone else did well as well.

Rutland Oaks again next….
