DOUBLE DOWNTON WORKS WONDERS
Leake Opener Weakens Mighty Oaks – Psycho Clearance prevents acorn growth

Unusually the season started with a cup match.  Without our usual first round bye, Aardvarks were pitched into September Junior Cup action for the first time since ‘ever’.  In fact this is the first campaign we’ve ever opened with a Cup Game.

This was an almost full strength Aardvarks.  Ali was still enjoying (hopefully) his Honeymoon, whilst Katherine Chapman was working (missing her first ever first game – except for last season!!), Carl Jennings (not available yet and also now a ‘C’) and Jen Stanbrook was injured (hope you recover soon Jen).

The match started evenly.  Aardvarks attacked with purpose and were in the lead after 10-15 when Julia Leake notched following good work by Paul McGreevy and Andy James.  (Julia scored the first match of last season as well).  Dave Downton was introduced after 23 mins and with his first touch he 1-2’d with Martin and with his second touch he scored (2-0).  He added a third soon after with a fast first time shot – nice work  Dave.

3-0 at the break. Aardvarks had some further good chances, with Dave missing a great chance for a hat-trick (we all reckon to avoid the ‘round buying’.  Oaks recovered and pulled one back from a short corner.  A further clearance from Ruth stopped a second being added.  Other Oaks chances included a post hitting shot after a super James tackle.  Jayne Barrs was on good form all afternoon.  Martin Leake showed super energy and ‘stop-ability’ throughout his time on pitch.  Clare ‘got through 3 different men in the first half’ (in joke), whilst the rest of the defence performed well. Paul, Luke and Andy  held the midfield together, whilst Andrew, Dave, Martin, Ju and Sarah gave a good forward unit display.  Pete Meakin was on the card for the first time (debut soon).

We held on despite strong Oaks pressure. No flicks but plenty of cups of tea.

Round Two – here we come.
