OAKS SHOW BOUNEBACKABILITY IN SEE-SAW DRAW

Paul McGreevy Scores and Captains the Side in his 200th Appearance

AND WE GO TO THE PUB AFTERWARDS

This was a good game.  Rutland Oaks had been neatly dispatched a few weeks ago in the Cup but they came back to Groby with a new plan and on the back of a 9-1 demolition of Syston Saints the week before.

Aardvarks saw the return of Alister Bates ‘fresh’ from his honeymoon.  Jayne Barrs, Sarah Dent and David Downton (having risen from last weeks sick-bed) also returned.

Paul McGreevy was presented with his ‘200 Club’ award before the game, along with the captains armband.

Jonah started, despite his ‘arm injury’ (sympathy hunting?).  A strong Aardvarks start was undermined when Oaks struck with their first attack of substance.  A strong pass into the D was swiftly deflected by the man with Yellow (Classic Aardvarks) Shirt.  1-0 Oaks.

James replaced Jonah and Aardvarks continued their impressive display.  Martin Leake was on fire down the right.  He had been the subject of some ‘Oaks plan’ to thwart him but he continued to torment the Oaks defence.  Good work allowed him around the back and he set-up McGreevy who lifted home, without the backboard noise.  1-1.

As the break loomed, Aardvarks were creating plenty but were next to concede.  A scramble in the goalmouth was ended when Oaks nicked it home.  2-1 Rutland.

Just as it looked like Oaks would take a lead into the break, Aardvarks equalised when a persistent Leake gained a deserved goal with a reverse stick sweeping finish.  2-2 at half-time.

Not much wrong at the break for the Aardvarks to sort out.  And in the first minutes of the second half, a poor clearance by Oaks enabled Martin Leake to steel the ball and slot home. 3-2 ‘varks.  What followed then was a display of some quality.  Chances for Downton, Hemsill, Bates, McGHreevy Meakin and I’m sure the Leakes’, did not result in any more goals but plenty of promise for the season.

In the first (and only) short corner for Oaks (conceded by James the foot (not one of the Joneses)), they slotted home when the Yellow Shirted chap slotted home with a neat flick.  3-3.

The crowd thought Andrew Hemsill had sealed the win when his shot went centimetres past the post very late on.

A great team performance.  It was Martin Leake who took most of the plaudits on the day, especially from the Oaks.  But I think as well as a promising return from Bates and great grittiness from Mr 200, Paul McGreevy, the real star of the day was Clare Lawrence-Simms.  She had a game of real defensive soundness.  No short corner concessions and a real smile on her face in the knowledge of game well played.  Well done to all.  Great performance which could have been a very high score indeed.

Oaks proved again to be great opponents.  We enjoyed some drinks and chips afterwards.  Thanks to Andy Hemsill for organising and to Andy James and Jonah for paying for half the food bill (the club will sub the rest-  I’ll tell Ozzie).
